Boss Pokemon are rare, uncapturable wild Pokemon. Their boss tier controls their battle level, model size, name and shader color, Mega form, palette, and additional rewards. Throwing a Poke Ball at a boss does not begin a capture attempt.

Natural spawning

Each standard wild spawn has a 1 in 256 (0.391%) chance to become a boss. In Ultra Space, the chance is 1 in 128 (0.781%). Eligible naturally selected bosses Mega Evolve whenever possible. Non-legendary species with a Mega form use the Mega-only tier weights, while legendary bosses use the Ultimate tier.

Separate Mega boss spawner

Mega boss spawn attempts occur on an average base interval of 10,000 ticks (8 minutes 20 seconds). Each attempt has a 30.00% chance to proceed, and a valid species and spawn location must still be available.

Mega boss spawn pool

The following species can be selected by the separate Mega boss spawner. Spawn weight is compared only with other entries valid at the selected location.

Boss tiers

Randomly selectable tiers

Randomly selectable tiers are chosen by relative weight. The all-tier chance uses every randomly selectable tier; the Mega-only chance uses only tiers that Mega Evolve eligible species.

Tier Color Weight All-tier chance Mega-only chance Level multiplier Added levels Battle level Model scale Mega Forced palette
Common #C0C0C0 50 33.11% - 1x 5 Highest opposing level + 5 1.2x No None
Uncommon #00D43F 40 26.49% - 1x 10 Highest opposing level + 10 1.4x No None
Rare #006EFF 30 19.87% - 1x 20 Highest opposing level + 20 1.6x No None
Epic #9F00D9 20 13.25% 64.52% 1x 30 Highest opposing level + 30 1.8x Yes None
Legendary #FFA200 10 6.62% 32.26% 1x 40 Highest opposing level + 40 2x Yes Shiny
Ultimate #00FFFF 1 0.66% 3.23% 1x 50 Highest opposing level + 50 2.2x Yes Shiny

Special tiers

These tiers are excluded from weighted random tier selection and are only applied by specific encounters or commands (such as the boss command). They are still true bosses — uncapturable, with the boss name colour and rewards — with two exceptions: Equal is a boss that battles at the player's level with no level, size, or Mega bonus, and Not Boss is simply the marker for an ordinary, non-boss Pokemon.

Tier Color Level multiplier Added levels Battle level Model scale Mega Forced palette Is boss ID
Drowned #67C9A4 1x 20 Highest opposing level + 20 3x No Drowned Yes drowned
Equal #FFFFFF 1x 0 Highest opposing level 1x No None Yes equal
Haunted #C281C7 1.25x 3 floor(Highest opposing level x 1.25) + 3 1x No None Yes haunted
Not Boss #FFFFFF 1x 0 Highest opposing level 1x No None No notboss

Level scaling

When battle starts, the highest level used by any opposing player is multiplied by the tier's level multiplier. The fractional part is discarded, then the tier's added levels are applied. The boss also battles with maximum IVs and a randomized maximum EV spread.

Mega forms and palettes

A Mega tier changes an eligible Pokemon into one of its Mega forms. Species with a primal form use that form instead. A tier with a forced palette applies that palette; otherwise the normal palette is used.

Mega item rewards

When an eligible Mega boss is defeated, one Mega item associated with its form is selected for the player receiving rewards. The first-item chance applies until that species and form has awarded its Mega item to the player; later defeats use the repeat chance.

Tier First Mega item Repeat Mega item
Epic 100.00% 2.50%
Legendary 100.00% 5.00%
Ultimate 100.00% 10.00%

Drops

Defeating a boss always gives that species' normal wild drops, plus bonus rewards based on its boss tier. A tier's bonus rewards are grouped into one or more reward sets, and every set is rolled separately each time the boss is defeated:

  • Activation — each set first rolls its own chance to activate. Some sets always activate; others only sometimes.
  • Selection — when a set activates it picks one (or more) rewards at random. An item's weight is how likely it is to be picked compared with the other items in the same set, so a higher weight drops more often.

Mega item rewards are rolled separately (see Mega item rewards above).
