An egg group is a breeding category that determines which Pokemon can produce Eggs together. Two Pokemon can breed at the Day-Care when they share at least one egg group and form a valid pairing: one male and one female of breedable species, or any breedable Pokemon paired with Ditto. Most Pokemon belong to one or two egg groups.
Egg group is set by species, so every form of a Pokemon (and both members of an evolutionary line) shares the same groups in most cases. The resulting Egg hatches into the lowest form of the mother's evolutionary line (or, when bred with Ditto, the non-Ditto parent's line). The number of egg cycles a Pokemon has determines how long its Egg takes to hatch.
Pokemon in the No Eggs Discovered group (baby Pokemon, most Legendary Pokemon, and gender-unknown species) cannot breed at all.
